The Book of 1 Kings

Introduction. The first and second books of Kings and the following first and second books of Chronicles in general follow on in chronological order and continue to record the reign of King David, and upon the death of King David record the transfer of power to his son Solomon.

Yet you will find that some of the history written in the last chapter of the second book of Samuel will be repeated again in the second half of the first book of Chronicles. In fact much of what is written in the first book of Kings about Saul and King David, is repeated word for word (KJV) in the second book of Chronicles.

We need to take note where circumstances are repeated in the bible, like the life of Jesus being recorded in varying ways by the four Gospels in the New Testament. There has to be some important messages or lessons for us where ever this occurs.

The first book of Kings starts where the second book of Samuel ends with the death of King David, and Solomon taking up the reigns. It outlines the succession of Solomon to the throne, building the Temple and furnishing it with much of the furniture that was used in the Tabernacle (The tent of meetings that had been previously used by Israel while living in the desert).

Following the death of King Solomon (chapter 11) the book records the lifestyle of the succeeding kings many of whom were Godly but many others that were very evil, namely Ahab and his wife Jezebel.

At this time God still had his prophets, Elijah who succeeded Samuel, who was used by God to discipline and bring to justice those leaders who did forsake the law of the Lord.

Further studies to this book will be given at a later date.
