In the previous book of Exodus we read how the children of Israel spent 40 years wandering in the desert, before finally arriving in the promised land of Canaan, Israel as we know it today. During that time in the desert wilderness, God under the leadership of Moses wished to have a Tent of Meetings where Israel could come and worship Him, He also needed to appoint a team to run the Tent of Meetings. The Levites were one of the tribes or families of Israel (Jacob) who God chose to SERVE in the Tabernacle, the Meeting Place where the whole of the Israelites met God and worship Him, while in the Desert.
The book of Leviticus describes the duties for the tribe of Levi (The Levites) to carry out in the Tent of Meetings, but it also lays out the laws from God for all the children of Israel to follow. It is the third of the five books written by Moses commonly referred to as the Pentateuch.
