Introduction. The first and second books of Kings and the following first and second books of Chronicles in general follow on in chronological order and continue to record the reign of King David, and upon the death of King David record the transfer of power to his son Solomon.
Yet you will find that some of the history written in the last chapter of the second book of Samuel will be repeated again in the second half of the first book of Chronicles. In fact much of what is written in the first book of Kings about Saul and King David, is repeated word for word (KJV) in the second book of Chronicles.
We need to take note where circumstances are repeated in the bible, like the life of Jesus being recorded in varying ways by the four Gospels in the New Testament. There has to be some important messages or lessons for us where ever this occurs.
The second book of Kings opens with the continuing work of Elijah the prophet who had succeeded Samuel, and was used by God to discipline and bring to justice those leaders who did forsake the law of the Lord.
The book describes how Elisha took over the reigns as prophet from Elijah, who was miraculously taken up into heaven in a chariot.
The book continues to records the lifestyle of the succeeding kings many of whom were Godly but many others that were very evil.
In the closing chapters of the book we see the moral behaviour of the kings get to an all time low. As a result God took his hand of protection away from Israel, with Babylon the nation of the north overthrowing them and taking most of the people back to Babylon into exile.
Further studies to this book will be given at a later date.
